Majorca Details

The northern part of the municipality is mountainous and rugged, and is virtually unpopulated.  The highest point at 927 m, is the sa Moleta of Esclop or Madonna, as it is popularly known because of its shape which is similar to a woman lying face up with her hands on her chest.

Off the coast of the town lies the island of Dragonera.  It was declared a National Park in 1995 which is accessible by sea from Puerto de Andratx.

The weather is typically Mediterranean, like much of Mallorca, summers are hot and winters are mild.  Precipitation is not abundant ranging around 500 mm annually. The humidity is high.

The main monuments of the town are the Church of Santa Maria de Andratx, the Church of the Virgen del Carmen Port Andrach, the Church of SArraco, the Castell de Son Mas (now City Hall) and a former Trappist monastery, which today is in ruins.  There are also a two towers in ruins, the Mola and the Port of Cala en Basset in Sant Elm.

Some monuments, such as Port des sa Tower and Castle are Orlandis, are privately owned. The town also has two museums, the Centro Cultural Andratx, located in the district of Sa Coma, Andratx to the north, and the Museum in Port Liedtke. Unfortunately other symbols of the town such as the legendary Teatro Argentino, dating back to 1912, have disappeared.

In the town we find the islet Dragonera, a National Park since 1995, which can be accessed easily by sea. Also noteworthy is La Trappe, part of the GOB (Balearic Group of Ornithology), which is carrying out the very important task of recovery for the area following the terrible forest fires of 1994.

Andraitx,  or Andrach, is a municipality in the autonomous community of Balearic Islands.  It is located in the south-west of Mallorca, from the region of the Sierra de Tramontana, which is 30 km from the capital.  Calvia borders to the east, northeast of the Estellenchs with the Mediterranean Sea to the north, west and south.  The council consists of 6 villages: Andraitx, Port dAndraitx, sa Coma, SArraco, Sant Elm and Camp de Mar.

Andraitx is also one of the municipalities of Mallorca.  It has a higher percentage of foreign residents, nearly one quarter of the population.  Many population centers are located in the southern part of town which have a number of valleys.
