Etymologically, the name Llubi stems from the Roman place name Castro-lupino, which was transformed into Castell Llubi, which nowadays is known as Llubi. Its also possible that the place name of Llubi is derived from a prehistoric talayotic village, located in the south,which was fortified with a massive wall. Previously Llubi was a llogaret (a group of houses belonging to another village) which depended on the village of Muro, which is located near the village.

Location


Llubi is located exactly at the Pla de Mallorca, and its typography is irregular. The centre of the town is located on two hills through which the Torrent dAumadra flows, into the lagoon of Muro. In fact, the town is very well connected to adjacent villages , such as Muro, Inca, La Puebla, Sineu, Santa Margarita, Maria de la Salud, etc.

Demographics

The municipality of Llubi stretches out over an area of 3,400 hectares and has a population of 2013 inhabitants, according to data published on the actual website of the City Council . The demographics ups and downs were constant during the first third of the twentieth century. But it was from the forties on,in the post-war period, that the depopulation of the village became more pronounced. The population density reached its peak in the sixties, with the climax of the construction boom. From then, the situation stabilized until the present day. However, the population now is gradually diminishing, but at a far lower and slower rate.

Agriculture

Llubi is mainly famous for its capers. It has been for many years the biggest producer of this fruit in the Balears, which makes that the llubinenc countryside offers unique gastronomic possibilities,found nowhere else in Mallorca. Basically the agriculture exists of dry land cultivation, almond and algarobbo are the most typical for the area. However, the star product   are the capers (tapara), the queen of all cultivations since always. It has become the basis of the tin industry.

Attractions

Railway Station. It is located on the rail road Inca La Puebla, currently operated by Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) and is currently used as a stop. This line was inaugurated by the Compania de los Ferrocarriles de Mallorca on the 24
th of October 1878 and closed on the 28th of February 1981 by FEVE. The line was reopened again by Seveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca on the 27th of December 2000. This station came to dispose over a passenger building, a bus garage , a small building for the Brigada de vias y Obras, and two goods platforms. One of them used to be located next to the garages and was destined for the wine that was produced in the area. The transported goods were mainly capers, algarrobas, and almonds, which were sent from Llubi; and from Palma fertilizers, and alcohol destined for the distilleries of the village, were supplied.

Talayot de Es Racons. To find it go to the southern area of Llubi, and so to say, we must find the Plaza de Sa Carretera and the Sineu street which leads towards the exit of the village. We follow until the road splits, and take the left street which leads directly to the talayots. Two talayots are conserved and also a part of the façade the wall. It is located at 900 meters of the village.

Llubi is a municipality in the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. Located on the island of Mallorca, in the district of Pla de Mallorca, north-west of the capital, almost in the centre of Mallorca and 40 km from the capital of the Balearic Islands, Palma de Mallorca. The celebrations of the patron saint, Sant Feliu, take place every first of August. Theres also the Festival of sErmita. The Feria is celebrated the first Tuesday after Santa Catalina. The market is on every Tuesday at the Plaça de la Carretera.

Other places. There are several windmills which were used until recently for the production of flour: the mills of Son Rafal, the mill of Can Suau, the mill of Can Ferragut, den Serra, Can Moreu , Can Mulet, den Blanc, Can Moronell, Cos, Can Mulet, Can Corbera. Also noteworthy are the crosses which used to indicate the end of the village in ancient times, such as the cross of Sa Riba , the cross of Moli de Son Rafal (1680), the cross of Molí de Son Ramis (1686), the cross of Son Setrill (s. XVIII). Sa Creu (1825).

Festivals

Fira de Tardor (Autumn Fair). Fair where agricultural machinery and various local products are exhibited.

San Felio.Celebration of the patron saint. It is celebrated on the 1st of August . There are a variety of acts and street dances at night, as well as parades of bands with drums and buglers.

Fira of Mel (Honey Fair.) A fair that started in 2000 and is celebrated every year with greater success.

Fiesta en la Ermita del Sant Crist del Remei. The first Tuesday after Easter. There is a mass celebrated in this chapel, and afterwards there are various acttractions such as plays for children, paellas, clay pigeon shooting, ball de bot, etc.

Fiesta de Sant Antoni. On the 17
th of January the festival of Sant Antoni is celebrated, when the animals are brought at the door of the Church to receive a blessing.

Temperature

The mild temperatures are of a Mediterranean climate, ranging between 3-15 degrees in the winter and 18-34 degrees in the summer.
