Montuiri

Majorca Details

The first stretches out over   the north and the east area of the municipality. The aligned elevations of the extreme north form the Sierra del Hinojo (Serra d'es Fonoi), which includes the Pico Moltó (Es Puig Molto) as well as the estates of Son Company, Sabor y Son Toni Coll and all the land up to the border with Lloret de Vista Alegre. On the west side of the municipality there are a number of elevations formed by the Pico de San Miguel (239 m) and areas of rough land (Ses Rotes, Son Comelles, Ses Rotes de Son Comelles , Es Coll de Sa Grava).

The other area (central, south-west and west) is composed of three parts.

The first are the plains surrounding the town, they are more rugged in the north (Son Manera and Sa Torre) ,while they are lower in the south of the village (Son Vanrell, So Na Moiana, Son Ripoll and Son Mut). Apparently many of these areas were wetlands in the past.

Exactly in the centre of the municipality, we find the of the villa of Montuďri, built on a mound of 170 m.

Finally in the extreme south of the municipality the land slopes up(Son Palou and Alcoraia) up to the Puig de Ses Tres Fites (342 m), these elevations continue up to the municipalities of Lluchmajor and Algaida.

The municipality of Montuiri is nowadays dry, but once , the plains surrounding the town were wetlands. Nowadays these areas only fill up with water in times of heavy rainfall.

The land is drained through several ditches that carry water to the torrente de Pina. This is the only important river that crosses the municipality, it originates in the estate of Alcoraia, and runs near the village via La Huerta del Puente (S'Hort d'es Pont) ,before flowing into Algaida via Son Vanrells.

The flora of Montuiri corresponds to the climate of the Mediterranean Balearic Islands. In this municipality there are no large areas of Mediterranean forests (pines, oaks and shrubs),only small concentrations are found in es Rafal-Sa Mudaina, in the rugged area of Ses Rotes and in the area of Sa Font Bosseta.

Montuiri (officially and in Catalan: Montuďri) is a municipality in the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. It is located in the district of Pla de Mallorca, on the island of Mallorca, bordered by the municipalities of Algaida, Lluchmajor, Porreras, San Juan and Lloret de Vista Alegre. The town is located north of the road "Palma-Arta", which connects this town with Palma and Manacor. The town was founded as “pueblo real”in the year 1300 under the “Carta de Poblament “of King James II of Mallorca.

The municipality of Montuiri represents very well the typical scenery of the Pla de Mallorca. The village is covered by small hills and small valleys. In the physical geography of the municipality, two different areas can be distinguished:

Until the'60s, Montuiri was an agricultural village. The majority of the population worked in this sector or in sectors depending on agriculture. With the explosion of tourism in Mallorca, the area was abandoned as the population went on to work in the service sector. Today in the town there are two rural hotels . Currently the majority of the population of Montuiri works in Palma de Mallorca or Manacor.

In the agricultural areas, cereals and almonds are cultivated. The vines disappeared after the plague of phylloxera in the nineteenth century. Also noteworthy is the cultivation of figs, apricots and some irrigated fruit trees .

The fauna of the municipality can be divided into two large groups: birds and mammals. The birds that inhabit the village are common throughout the island: swallows, partridges and other migration birds. The mammals are also common throughout the island : rabbits and rodents.
