The climate of Puigpunent is a typically coastal
Mediterranean climate. It provides hot summers and mild winters, although it
should be noted that the summer temperatures are smoothed by the relative
altitude at which the municipality is located and its winter temperatures are
slightly lower than other points of the island. As for the precipitation, it is
scarce in the summer, leading to periods of drought, and in the winter precipitation
is mild, and sometimes but rarely in the form of snow.
Puigpunent has become recognized in Mallorca and in
Spain for its ambitious work on the empowerment of recycling. So, in the first
year of the implementation of its risky recycling plan , it has become the
municipality with the highest recycling rate ofMallorca and Spain. This has
been possible thanks to the cooperation of all residents of the municipality,
who through the Local Agenda 21 have proposed improvements that were needed and
also thanks to the City of Puigpunent for its staunch determination to
implement a complicated recycling program, but it has been successful and it
claims to be imitated by other municipalities with similar characteristics.
This recycling program has reduced the not reusable
waste by 70%. In general, the program is based on the separation of all waste
at home and on the collection of the waste at home. This collection is
organized following a weekly schedule, but every day only one type of waste is
collected: organics, plastics, non-recyclables etc.. Another noteworthy point
is that recycling bags are distributed to residents for free by the council
because, for example, the bag for the organic waste needs to be biodegradable.
