Attached to the church and opposite the Plaza de
San Marcos is a rectory, in which interior you can observe an exhibition of
medieval pottery of Sineu. In front of this building is the monument which is
commonly called "the Lion" , it is a copper sculpture of 1945, a winged
lion, symbol of the evangelist St. Mark, which holds the shield of Sineu with
its front legs.
In the Calle Sant Francesc, you find the Magnifico
Ayuntamiento. The Ayuntamiento occupies the building of the ancient convent of
the Minimos, with its fifteenth-century cloister located on the side of another
church, of a baroque style, built during the eighteenth century.
The Palace of the Kings of Majorca is a building,
which was reconstructed during the raign of King Jaume II of Mallorca, at the
beginning of the fourteenth century. The former building was of Islamic origin.
In 1583 it was occupied by a community of nuns of Concepcion, who are still
there in the present day. In the seventeenth century the monastery was reformed
and extended, in which architectural form it is preserved until today. Typical
elements of a fortified palace and of a cloistered monastery can be observed.
Attached to the Palace is the church of baroque style.
In the
Calle Hospital we find the building of the Oratory of St. Joseph, founded in
the thirteenth century. Although the chapel still retains original Gothic
elements, it underwent severe alterations during the course of history.
The building of the train station, in the early twentieth century, houses now
the Art Center of Sineu, where exhibitions of famous contemporary artists are
held.
Along the ancient streets of Sineu, there are some medieval wells and various
crosses as well as ancient windmills. They show how important the cultivation
of cereals used to be.
The most relevant building of Sineu is the parish
church of Santa Maria de Sineu. The church (already documented in the year
1248) suffered a terrible fire in the year 1505, which lead to the construction
of a new temple of Gothic style similar to the previous one. In 1880 and 1881 a
series of extension works were realized, these works consisted of the building
of the main cross-shaped structure and a big octagonal dome, covered with
stars. The temple has a single main structure with side chapels. At the end of
the twentieth century and early twenty-first century structural restoration
works were carried out, which were finished in 2007 with the installation of
seven bells in the tower of the Parish.
