Festivities: Sineu celebrates the "Festes de
la Mare de Déu d'Agost”, during the days around the 15th of
August with games, fireworks, feasts, dances, etc.. These are the typical
festivals of the Mediterranean summer holiday, during which the village enjoys
many cultural events during the day and a wide range of nocturnal activities
when it is cooler.
Holy Week:In Sineu, a solemn moment of the year is
the Holy Week. Many people come to the village to see the processions and the
accompanying hooded men as they walk the streets of the town, especially on
Good Friday. The Easter processions are organized by the Real Prohomonia de
Sineu, which is presided by King Juan Carlos I, and the Patronato de
Cofradias de Sineu, which on its turn is presided by the matriarchy of the
family Isern- Estela, sponsors of the images of the procession and it is
coordinated by Pedro Gelabert Salva.
Other
festivals celebrated in Sineu are that of San Marcos (patron of the town) on
the 25th of April and that of San Antonio, with the typical bonfires on which
sausages are cooked on the 17th of January.
Institutionally during the past few years they have revived an ancient fair to
promote the “sobrassada”, a typical Majorcan product. The Feria de Santo
Tomas-Muestra de Matanzas is held each year on the second Sunday in December.
Fira-Sa: Sineu is the capital of the spring fairs.
It is the village which markets attract the most visitors. "Sa Fira"
of Sineu is Mallorca's oldest market, it was established by a privilege of King
Sancho in the year 1318, it is celebrated the first Sunday of May each year.
The fair has a predominantly agricultural and craft aspect, it has preserved
the tradition and the sense of an annual market very well. Fruits, vegetables,
plants, pets, clothes, chairs, ladders, and pottery fill the central streets of
the town. Agricultural machinery and displays of cars, along with attractions
for children and various types of vendors fill the more ex-centric streets and
squares . It is estimated that tens of thousands of visitors come every year to
the fair of Sineu , the second largest of the island after the fair of Dijous
Bo of Inca.
