Majorca Details

Being a part of the Pla de Mallorca, the topography is essentially flat, with no major geological elevations. However, two structures which alter this flat geography should be mentioned: the Mound of Sant Nofre (255 meters) and the Mound of Reig (206 meters).

The town of Sineu (formerly including San Juan and Lloret de Vistalegre) has an area surface of 47.74 km ² and, according to data from 2007 a population exceeding 3,000 inhabitants. It is bordered by   Costitx, Inca, Llubí, María de la Salud, Ariany, Petra, San Juan and Lloret de Vistalegre.

Some have associated Sineu with a place called Sinium de la Mallorca Romana, which means “a place with some people”.

In the late nineteenth century Sineu counted more than 5000 inhabitants due to its railway connection with the rest of the island. When in 1975 the railway traffic was suspended, the number of inhabitants was reduced to approximately 2200 people.

Therefore, although Sineu now has a population of more than 3,000 people, only a decade ago the population density was 20% lower.

However a floating population should be taken into account (especially on weekends) which is normally not considered, but which is important (in terms of use of electricity, water, services, etc.)..

Indeed, good communications (new rail line, good roads ...), the central location of the village, and the services at its disposal (a health center, an institute of secondary education, etc.. ) have attracted many foreigners and Spanish people from the mainland in recent years. Obviously this went together with a quite remarkable increase of construction.

In 1996, 91% of inhabitants were born in the Balearic Islands ( 6% were born in other places in Spain, and only 3% abroad). In 2004, the number of inhabitants born in the islands was reduced to 78% (7% were from other places in Spain and another 15% were from another country).

This is important from the standpoint of cultural and linguistic integration of immigrants. But as in all small towns in the center, which maintain their rural character , newcomers are somewhat forced to speak the language of the people, which accelerates the integration process.

The population of Sineu, like that of other municipalities in the Pla de Mallorca, is an aging population. While in the Balearic Islands in general , the population is younger than 64 and only 13% is older, in Sineu 22% of the population is older than 64.

Sineu is a municipality in the autonomous community of Balearic Islands. It is located on the island of Mallorca.

Sineu is located in the heart of the island of Mallorca, administratively part of the district of Pla, the Consell de Mallorca and the Government of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands, and historically and culturally part of the ancient Crown of Aragon, in the district of Pla de Mallorca.
